Benzyl Chloride is an organic compound which is prepared by reaction of toluene with chlorine. It has chemical formula C7H7Cl with molecular weight of 126.58 g/mol. This compound appears as colorless to slightly yellow colored liquid which is soluble in water, ethanol, & chloroform. It is also used as precursor to benzyl esters that find application in manufacturing of plasticizers and perfumes. Benzyl Chloride has pungent odor with boiling point of 179 degrees Celsius. To produce Grignard reagent, it reacts readily with magnesium metal. In pharmaceutical industry, this chemical is widely used for synthesis of amphetamine class of drugs.
