It is known to be industrially produced by heating mixture of methane & chlorine at 400-500 degrees Celsius under controlled conditions. In presence of phase transfer catalyst, Chloroform reacts with aqueous sodium hydroxide. It appears as colorless liquid with ethereal odor and boiling point of 61.15 g/mol.
